Baruch College appointed Heather MacCulloch as the sixth Director of Athletics and first female in the 48 year history of the school's athletic program on Monday, August 1, 2016.
MacCulloch brings more than 20 years of administration and compliance experience with intercollegiate affiliations ranging from the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA landscape.
Prior to her appointment, she spent four years (2012-2016) as the Director of Athletics at the State University of New York (SUNY)Â Maritime College in the Bronx, New York.
MacCulloch has been a trailblazer at her previous positions. She was the first female Director of Athletics of all the state maritime academies in the United States. She was also the first female Interim Director of Athletics at Division II Felician College in New Jersey. In addition, she previously served as the Associate Director of Athletics at Monroe College (NJCAA) and Bloomfield College (Div. II).
At SUNY Maritime College, MacCulloch oversaw the entire athletics, intramural and club sports programs, which featured 15 varsity sports, two club programs, and more than 400 student-athletes competing for regional conferences such as the Skyline, Eastern Collegiate Football, USA Rowing, ICSA and NCAA championships.
MacCulloch oversaw major renovations to facilities for baseball, football, men's and women's lacrosse and men's and women's soccer with the renovation of the baseball field and the construction of a new turf field replacement for all field sports.
Looking to the future, MacCulloch is committed to maintaining the integrity and enhancing the competitiveness of the Baruch College athletics' program. She aims to foster athletic and academic partnerships to enhance student-athlete academic success, as well as demonstrate a commitment to diversity and gender equity in all regards.
While at Baruch the last 5 plus years, MacCulloch has guided the success of the program by overseeing 13 teams, a multimillion dollar budget, 30,000 square foot facility, rentals, memberships, intramurals and physical education. Since the inception of the AD’s Honor Roll (gpa 3.3 or higher) in Fall of 2019, there have been over 550 student-athletes named to the list.
MacCulloch also owns a solid record of both regional and national leadership and service. She has most recently served a four-year appointment on the NCAA association-wide Committee on Women's Athletics as well as the Emerging Sports and Women of Color subcommittee.
She has been on the ECAC Board of Directors, held a committee appointment on the NCAA Division II Regional Advisory Committee for Softball (2005-'08), was on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Committee on Ethics and Infractions, and served as the Chair of the SWA committee for the CACC as well. She is currently serving as the President of the CUNY Athletic Conference and is serving a two year term that began July 2020. She serves as the chair of the CUNYAC Constitution Committee and of Baruch College’s Athletic Compliance Team. Most recently in June 2020, MacCulloch received the Baruch College Distinguished Leader award for her outstanding leadership.
Additionally, from September of 2004 through July of 2008, MacCulloch served as a member of the NCAA Division II Legislation Committee and held the post of Chair of the Interpretations Subcommittee for two of those years. Her commitment to the betterment of the student-athlete and sports doesn't stop there, as she was also the first representative ever to be appointed to the NACWAA Legislation Committee from a junior college in 2012.
Prior to arriving at Maritime, MacCulloch was the Associate Director of Athletics at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y., for over two years. While at Monroe, she oversaw compliance and was an integral part of the college-wide management team. Under her leadership, a compliance program was developed and the academic prowess of student-athletes was strengthened by the new policies and procedures that were initiated.
In addition to the overall departmental operational duties, MacCulloch also managed a 13-sport scholarship budget and was an integral part of the planning and implementation process of the inaugural year of a new football program at Monroe. Additionally, a new website was launched and several championships were won, including the women's basketball team, which won the 2011 and 2012 NJCAA Division II National Championships.
MacCulloch grew up in Ronkonkoma, N.Y. and attended Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y. on a softball pitching scholarship. She played four years of softball for the Clippers and continued her softball career as a pitcher for the N.Y. Raiders, competing in several national championships before hanging up her cleats in 2000. Since then she has given lessons to girls, while also conducting clinics for coaches and athletes in the Greater New York area. She has a real passion for giving back to the sport that gave her so much.
MacCulloch received her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, with a minor in accounting and finance from Concordia College in 1995, and her Master's in Art in Education Sports Management from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. in 1998. She currently resides in Yonkers, NY and has great plans for Baruch College Athletics.
