Bearcats Fall in CUNYAC Semi-Final (62-59)

The women's basketball team's participation in the CUNYAC Tournament came to an end tonight in the semi-final round after a narrow 62-59 loss at John Jay College.

The visiting Bearcats led 17-16 after the first quarter and quickly took a 20-16 lead on a long three-pointer by Madison Thorton-Lewis to start the second quarter.

The Bloodhounds battled back and finished the second quarter with a 10-1 run to lead 33-23 at halftime. They later built up their lead to 40-26 during the third quarter.

The Bearcats did not go away quietly and slowly rallied by chipping away at the double-digit deficit to set up an exciting final minute of the semifinal contest.

The Bloodhounds hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 35 seconds to hold off the Bearcats rally after Mia Castillo lit up the gym with two long threes in the final 14 seconds to get as close as 60-59, but the Bloodhounds hung on to advance to Friday's Championship.

Castillo led with 19 points to go along with nine rebounds, eight assists, six steals, and four blocks, while D'Andre McRae had a double-double with 16 points (6-8 fg) and 12 rebounds.

Madison Thornton-Lewis scored 11 points and Elissa Leung finished with nine points and three assists.

Kamryn Hammond led the Bloodhounds with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The team is a contender to receive a berth to play in the ECAC Division III Post-Season Championship Tournament that gets underway during the weekend of March 1-2 at higher seeds. An announcement of the bracket and schedule will be announced next Monday afternoon, February 26.
