Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener, Defeat Yeshiva

The women's basketball team defeated Yeshiva University 77-68 in the season opener on Friday afternoon in the ARC Arena. 

The Bearcats controlled the action early building a 19-11 advantage in the first quarter and finished the first half strong leading 46-31 at the break.

Yeshiva battled back scoring the final six points of the third quarter and the first seven points of the fourth quarter to get as close as 63-61 with 6:34 remaining.

Elissa Leung took over scoring the next four points to grow the lead back up to 67-61. Mia Castillo added a layup to make it 69-61.

Yeshiva stormed back again to get as close as 69-65 on a Daniella Bessler three with under five minutes left, but the Bearcats again responded with a three by Castillo and two free throws by Leung to hold for the home victory.

Castillo was top scorer for the Bearcats with 34 points, seven assists, seven rebounds, and three steals. Leung finished with 18 points.

D'Andre McRae had 10 points and five rebounds. Brianna Lopez scored six points, including making a key free throw to make it 76-65 with 1:24 left.

The Bearcats scored 26 points off 27 turnovers by Yeshiva for the home victory. 

Bessler led Yeshiva with 32 points (7-12 3fg) and Jasmin May-Danker had 11 points and eight rebounds.
