Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

U.S.M.M.A. Defeats Bearcats in Non-Conference Contest

The women's basketball team lost 71-60 to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday night in King's Point on Long Island.

The visiting Bearcats struggled early falling behind 15-1 after six minutes, but they battled all the way back to cut the deficit to three points (23-20) on a jumper by Mia Castillo with 4:24 left in the second quarter.

U.S.M.M.A., who won the Skyline Conference Championship last season and played in the NCAA Tournament, managed to build the lead back up to 10 for a 35-25 halftime score. 

The Bearcats kept trying to chip away in the second half but key baskets and 28 second-half rebounds by U.S.M.MA. clinched their season opener home win.

Castillo led all scorers this evening with 29 points to go along with five steals and four assists.

Elissa Leung scored 14 points and D'Andre McRae had 11 points with seven rebounds in the tough loss

Grace Johnson led the home team with 22 points (9-12 fg). 

The Bearcats will return home on Saturday to play the University of Hartford at 1:00 p.m.
