Women's Basketball Off to Best CUNYAC Start Since 2016-17

The women's basketball team defeated the Lighting of Lehman College, 69-51, in a CUNYAC contest on Bearcats' Alumni Day on Saturday afternoon in the ARC Arena.

After a 13-13 first-quarter score, the Bearcats broke open the contest in the second quarter outscoring the Lightning 20-8 for a 33- 21 halftime lead.

They controlled the game the rest of the way leading by as much as 25 points in the fourth quarter before a late Lightning run cut the deficit to under 20 points.

They scored 38 points in the paint and 26 points on the fast break to improve their CUNYAC record to 5-1, their best conference start since the 2016-17 season. They also used good defense to limit their opponent to 0-for-16 from three. 

The NCAA Division III top scorer Mia Castillo poured in 39 points shooting 16-of-25 from the field, including 5-of-10 from three. She had a double-double with 11 rebounds and added four assists, four steals and four blocks.

Elissa Leung had nine points and a career-high nine assists in the home win, while Precious Mitchell tied a career-high coming off the bench to grab 12 rebounds. D'Andre McRae scored eight points.

Ramatoulaye Diallo had a big game for the visitors with 33 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals in an exciting shootout all afternoon against Mia Castillo.
