Women's Basketball Gets Past Medgar Evers, Play John Jay Next in CUNYAC Semi-Final

On Saturday afternoon, the women's basketball team finished their CUNYAC quarter-final round contest strong to help avert an upset with a 65-46 home victory against Medgar Evers College.

With the result, the third-seeded Bearcats advance to the semi-final round on Tuesday to play at second-seeded John Jay College with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Today's exciting quarterfinal had three different stories.

First, the Bearcats jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and led at halftime 37-24 behind a strong defense that forced 19 turnovers by the Cougars.

The Cougars dramatically rallied in the third quarter scoring 13 of the first 14 points to get as close as 38-37 with 4:47 left in the quarter.

The Bearcats used solid defense and strong shooting to turn the momentum back in their favor going on a game-busting run of 21 consecutive points to lead 59-37 with 4:08 left.

That run assured the Bearcats of advancing to the semifinal thanks to the defense that forced 37 total turnovers (24 steals) and great scoring efforts from Mia Castillo (31 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals, 5 assists) and Elissa Leung (21 points, 5 assists, 4 steals).

D'Andre McRae (12 rebounds, 5 steals), Madison Thornton-Lewis (7 points, 7 rebounds), and Angela Baccarella (5 steals) also came up big in the team's 16th win of the season (best win total since 2014-15).

The visiting Cougars were led by Sheily Quezada with 14 points, nine blocks, eight rebounds, and three steals.
