Baseball Sweeps John Jay to Jump Back Into CUNYAC Race

The baseball team put together one of their best days of the season sweeping John Jay College in a makeup doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, New York.

The Bearcats won the first game 8-1 and took the second in extra innings 6-5 in an exciting ninth-inning walk-off orchestrated by Joseph Cocozza.

In the first game, the visiting Bloodhounds scored first in the third inning but Nicholas LaPointe shut the door the rest of the game pitching a three-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks for his first intercollegiate win.

The bats came alive in the fourth inning with six runs on seven hits thanks to a two-run single by Julian Diaz, an RBI double by Joseph Bello, a Benjamin Luciano two-run double, and a bases-clearing triple by Roy Longarzo.

They added two more runs in the fifth inning on a Diaz RBI single and an RBI ground out by Bello for the eventual 8-1 victory.

Cocozza (3-for-3, 2 runs) and Diaz (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 run) had the top numbers at the plate.

The second game started with plenty of runs early as the Bloodhounds led 5-4 after three innings.

Diaz came up big again with an RBI single to score Cocozza in the fifth inning for the 5-5 tie.

The two teams stayed quiet into extra innings when the Bearcats won in a walk-off in the ninth. Cocozza singled, went to second on a balk, stole third base, and then beat out a play at the plate to score on a fielder's choice by Diaz for the dramatic victory.

Cocozza finished batting 2-4, with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Longarzo batted 2-for-4, with two runs scored and Bello finished with three RBI.

Maxwell Murray wins in solid relief after pitching three scoreless innings for his first intercollegiate win.
